If there is one year that has proven that the superhero culture is in danger and needs to reinvent itself to survive, it is 2023. It's not just a specific studio that has suffered the wrath of the changed nature of viewers, but the entire ecosystem has gone through the heat. Whether it's the highest-paid Hollywood superstar aiming to change the hierarchy of power (Black Adam) or a studio trying to introduce their female saviors in a peppy way, they all failed (The Marvels)

Now, as The Marvels are projected to be part of the worst 5 performers in the realm of superhero cinema, we at OTTplay list down the top 5 and how they performed at the Box Office during their respective releases. Read on.

5. Shazam! Fury Of The Gods (2023)

It was being called the (then) DCEU’s Deadpool. Shazam entered the ring with pressure itself. A sequel to a rather liked movie, the film did have big shoes to fill. Add to that, it was one of the earliest superhero movies to release post the lockdown easing down. But it didn't create any dent as expected, and even with an illustrious cast on display, it could only earn $133 Million worldwide, with a domestic collection of $57 Million.

4. Elektra (2005)

Jennifer Garner as Elektra in Ben Affleck’s 2003 release Daredevil was one of its highlights. But when the studio decided to give her a standalone project in 2005, audiences probably weren't ready to have her only in the spotlight. The movie failed at the box office and could only earn a little above its budget. Made at $43 Million, the movie earned $24.4 million at the domestic box office and $32.27 million internationally, leading to a total of $56 Million worldwide.

3. The Marvels (2023)

In the coming days, we will see experts dissect what went wrong with The Marvels. But the talks of Superhero Fatigue it was surrounded with turned out to be the one that probably worked against it. No one could have thought that a movie that is technically a trigger to Avengers would open to a mere $47 Million opening. Reports project that the movie will earn between $210 Million to $240 Million by the time it ends its theatrical run. This will be the lowest-grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe movie in history if those numbers turn out to be true.

2. The Flash (2023)

Ezra Miller and their controversies had already doomed The Flash by a very large margin, and there was redemption in sight for a very long time until release. Yes, many found merit in the movie, but that was also overshadowed by the poor VFX and the rushed reshoots that were visible. The movie could only earn $270.6 Million worldwide, which is not even equal to its budget estimated to be beyond $300 Million.

1. Fantastic Four (2015)

Josh Trank took the task to re-establish Marvel’s first family and was pretty confident. But the chaos that unfolded behind the scenes midway had him not just walk away from the project but cut ties and abandon it completely. Fox brought Simon Kinberg to finish the reshoots. The movie fell flat upon release, and no one could connect. Made at a budget of $120 Million, the movie earned $167 Million, of which only $56.1 Million was collected domestically.

Now that both the MCU, DCU, and even Sony are busy chalking out a path that helps them retain the magic they once held, let’s see what the new era has to offer. Stay tuned to OTTplay for more.
