The iconic Matrix franchise redefined and revolutionised filmmaking in the late ‘90s and early 2000s and set a new benchmark for action sequences. Directed by the Wachowski siblings, the trilogy told the story of Neo (Keanu Reeves), a messianic figure destined to save mankind from a post-apocalyptic dystopian future where a vast majority of the population lives inside a simulation. Neo joins forces with Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss), and others to save the world from the evil cyber-intelligence.
After a gap of nearly 18 years, the fourth instalment of the franchise titled, The Matrix Resurrections was released during the holiday season in 2021. While the film may not have been as universally acclaimed as the original trilogy, with mixed reception from fans and critics, it was praised for its innovative visuals and sound design. Lana Wachowski returned to the director’s chair for the film, but without her sister Lily Wachowski. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss reprised their roles from the original trilogy, while Yahya Abdul-Mateen II replaced Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus. Jessica Henwick (Game of Thrones, Iron Fist), Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother, Gone Girl, It’s a Sin), Jada Pinkett-Smith (Gotham, Collateral), Christina Ricci (The Addams Family, Speed Racer), and Priyanka Chopra Jonas (Bajirao Mastani, Baywatch, The White Tiger), essay supporting characters in the film.
