A Clockwork Orange - Alex Delarge (YouTube)

Stanley Kubrick’s acclaimed adaptation of Anthony Burgess’s dystopian novel is one of the most thought-provoking yet disturbing films ever made. Its lead character Alex DeLarge played by Malcolm McDowell is a sociopath who finds amusement in the pain and punishment he inflicts on innocent civilians. DeLarge and his gang of thugs loot, plunder, assault, and rape unsuspecting victims across England.

One flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - Nurse Ratched (YouTube)

Based on the novel by Ken Kesey, One flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is widely regarded as one of the finest films of the 20th century. It also inspired unofficial adaptations in Malayalam and Hindi. The 1975 film is set in a psychiatric institution where its head nurse, Ratched, enforces absolute power through cruelty and abuse. She doesn’t shy away from breaking any moral or ethical codes to exact vengeance on those who may have irked her in some way. Actress Louise Fletcher received an Academy Award for her performance as the sinister Nurse Ratched.

No Country for Old Men - Anton Chigurh (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video)

The 2007 neo-western crime drama created by the Coen brothers features one of the best villains ever written for film. Based on Cormac McCarthy's book of the same name, the film stars Javier Bardem as Anton Chigurh, a contract killer devoid of empathy, remorse, and compassion, which was praised by critics. In fact, Bardem would go on to win an Oscar, Golden Globe, and a BAFTA for essaying a truly chilling character.

Inglourious Basterds - SS Colonel Hans Landa (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video)

Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds is quite possibly one of his best films. Set towards the tail end of World War II, this alternative history film features a villain who is an SS officer for Nazi Germany tasked with hunting down Jews who may have escaped persecution. Essayed by the excellent Christoph Waltz, Landa is hyper-intelligent, cold, and conniving, one who can be charming and terrifying in equal measure at the same time. Walts on his Hollywood debut for the film won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor.

The Green Mile - Percy Wetmore (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video)

Doug Hutchison portrays the role of a prison guard in Frank Darabont’s adaptation of Stephen King’s novel The Green Mile and is widely regarded as one of the most despicable characters ever created. He used his family ties to torture the inmates in the prison which sickened everyone including those who worked with him. One scene, in particular, epitomizes the pure evil inside as he sabotages the electric chair used for executions so that an inmate would suffer a slow and agonizing death.

Gone Girl- Amy Dunne (Netflix, Amazon Prime Video)

Gillian Flynn’s novel adapted by David Fincher features an ending that is eerie and disturbing, thanks to Rosamund Pike’s riveting performance as the sinister Amy Dunne. Dunne is the seemingly normal wife who goes missing in an apparent kidnapping. As the plot unravels, it is revealed that Dunne had orchestrated the entire thing to exact revenge on her unfaithful husband Nick, played by Ben Affleck. She takes extreme measures and even commits murder and other heinous crimes to set her plan in motion.
