The series, written by Shaun Grant and directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth, Nitram), provides a moving examination of love, conflict, and recollection. During his terrifying confinement in a Japanese prison camp on the Burma-Thailand railway during World War II, Lieutenant Colonel Dorrigo Evans—played by Jacob Elordi—becomes a spectre because of his brief but intense connection with Amy Mulvaney—played by Odessa Young. Dorrigo, played by Ciarán Hinds, is an older man who thinks back on his life in the 1980s.
The ensemble cast is completed by Simon Baker as Keith, Show Kasamatsu as Major Nakamura, Thomas Weatherall as Frank Gardiner, Heather Mitchell as older Ella, and Olivia DeJonge as Ella. Cast members underwent a six-week intensive training programme to realistically portray the mental and physical toll of incarceration during warfare. Principal photography took place in several locations around New South Wales from 2023 to 2024.

The 75th Berlin International Film Festival hosted the series' premiere in February 2025, and since then, its reflective storyline and strong performances have won rave reviews.
