Romantic comedy-drama The Royals will return for a second season on Netflix. After its May 9, 2025, premiere, the series became an instant hit around the world, going on to become the first Indian show to ever make it into Netflix's Global Top 10 Non-English TV Shows and trending in 58 different countries.

The Royals setting and premise

The Royals takes place in the made-up city of Morpur in Rajasthan and was created by Rangita and Ishita Pritish Nandy. It was produced by Pritish Nandy Communications. Sophia Kanmani Shekhar, played by Bhumi Pednekar (Toilet: Ek Prem Katha and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan), is an ambitious entrepreneur with grand plans to open a five-star hotel called "Royal B&B." Prince Aviraaj Singh, played by Ishaan Khatter (Beyond the Clouds and Khaali Peeli), is an ambivalent royal who receives the burdensome estate from his family without warning. A web of amorous and comical entanglements forms as a result of their partnership.

Vihaan Samat plays Aviraaj's brother Digvijay, Zeenat Aman plays the eccentric royal grandmother, Sakshi Tanwar plays Rani Padmaja, and Lisa Mishra, Nora Fatehi, Milind Soman, and Dino Morea round out the ensemble cast. Priyanka Ghose and Nupur Asthana helmed the series, set in Jaipur and Mumbai.

Mixed critical reception

Critical reaction was uneven, despite the show's lauded lavish surroundings and A-list ensemble. Critics have pointed out the leads' lack of chemistry and that the script is too conventional. In spite of this, the show's popularity was high enough to warrant a renewal.

Creator's vision and Season 2 tease

According to creator, showrunner, and producer Rangita Pritish Nandy, Season 1 of The Royals was their ode to the romantic comedy genre: palaces, polo races, midnight masqued parties, fort-top romps and raves—love at its most tumultuous and endearing—and they couldn't have been more excited for the next season. That went viral all over the world. All this meant was that the makers needed to return for more. Nandy said their second season with Netflix will be even better than the first, and they can't wait to work with them again. A lot more drama, fiery exchanges, and spirited banter are on the way. Even though the crowns are symbolic, the anarchy is regal in their world.

Major disclosures occurred at the end of the first season, including the dismissal of Sophia from her position at the company, the discovery that Aviraaj is the illegitimate son of Rani Padmaja, and the exposure of secrets inside the royal family. Season 2 will likely focus on what happens following these events, including the intricacies of the royal family and Sophia's journey after exile.

Season 2 status

Season 2's production details and premiere date are still under wraps.
