James Gunn, who directed The Suicide Squad, recently spoke about the original ending of the film, which he had decided to forego on account of it being "too dark".
In an interview with Cinema Blend, Gunn said that he had complete freedom to kill of any character, but there was one character he chose to keep safe. Gunn said he had considered killing off Daniela Melchior's Ratcatcher 2, but decided to scrap that bit from the final version of the script.
"At the very end of the movie, Ratcatcher 2 had... smuggled in and gotten away with all of that information from Jotunheim, and the rest of the group didn't know about it," he told the outlet. "And [Amanda] Waller blew up her head, after they went back to the prison."
Gunn said that he had imagined at this point Harley (Margot Robbie) would try to talk to Bloodsport (Idris Elba), who is freaking out because "he's connected to this person, like a daughter," but Harley would tell Bloodsport to let go.
"Bloodsport ends up shooting Waller in the heart with a combustible bullet and threatening to blow her up. It was sort of complicated, but it was something like that. He didn't shoot her in the heart. He shot her right below the heart with one of the exploding bullets, which we see Peacemaker using earlier in the movie. And so now she has to do what he says," said Gunn.
Gunn said that this ending was not the story he wanted to tell, "which is much more about the characters' different journeys, emotionally." He concluded that the ending he finally went with was perfect for the film.
The Suicide Squad saw Margot Robbie return as Harley Quinn, Viola Davis as Squad mastermind Amanda Waller, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, and Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag. Idris Elba, John Cena, Nathan Fillion, Peter Capaldi, David Dastmalchian, Taika Waititi and Pete Davidson were also part of the cast.
