The Waking of a Nation: Nikita Dutta describes her character as 'bold, fierce' woman - 'Ram Madhvani chose to show...'

The Waking of a Nation is one of the few web projects that will be out on streaming this week. Directed by Ram Madhvani, the web show stars Taaruk Raina and Nikita Dutta in the lead roles. The series is set against the backdrop of the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. In the show, Nikita plays the character of Poonam, which the actress described as one of the 'strongest' characters she has portrayed on the screen.

In an interview with Mid-Day, Nikita Dutta opened up about essaying the role of Poonam in Ram Madhvani's The Waking of a Nation. Spilling beans about her character, the actress said, "She is a strong, bold, and fierce woman—not in the stereotypical loud Punjabi way. He’s chosen to show me as a woman who has a voice, who worked back in the day, and as someone who can take control of situations within her capabilities."

Dutta added that an artiste doesn't get a chance to play characters like (Poonam) frequently. The actress felt privileged to be an essential part of the filmmaking world. She further shared her experience of working with filmmaker Ram Madhvani. The actress called him one of the 'finest filmmakers' she has worked with.

"Not many filmmakers give a lot of substance and priority to their women characters, but if you see his body of work—from Neerja [2016] to Aarya—you will see the women playing [strong characters]," added Nikita.

The Waking of a Nation attempts to reimagine the history through the lens of the Hunter Commission's inquiry. Produced by Ram and Amita Madhvani, the show's star cast also includes Sahil Mehta, Ranjit Singh, Bhawsheel Singh Sahni, Ananyabrata Chakravorty, Man Singh Karamati and others.
