Filmmaker Ram Madhvani's web show, The Waking of a Nation, recently premiered on SonyLIV and OTTplay Premium on March 7, 2025. Created and directed by Madhvani, the web series is set against the backdrop of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919. It reimagines history through the Hunter Commission's enquiry. In a recent interview, director Ram opened up about his show's comparisons with Vicky Kaushal's 2021 film, Sardar Udham.
In an interview with Firstpost, Ram Madhvani reacted to The Waking of a Nation's comparisons with Shoojit Sircar's 2021 film Sardar Udham. For those unaware, the Amazon Prime Video film's climax highlighted General Dyer and Michael O'Dwyer giving their accounts to the Hunter Commission.
Talking about the comparisons, Ram said, "Well, first, I spoke to Shoojit and Ronnie, just to ask them for their advice and their guidance and help before we started making The Waking of a Nation. I’ve known Shoojit from Advertising Days. We asked them where they shot and the production kind of help that we needed."
The filmmaker revealed that he, Shantanu Srivastava (writer), and Shatrujeet Nath (writer) were clear that they wouldn't show the massacre in the web series. They chose to treat the incident with dignity by not showing it. "You don’t really know what happened. And so we’ve done it from the survivors. The show is dedicated to the people who lost their lives, but we have not shown the massacre," added Madhvani.
Ram Madhvani's The Waking of a Nation follows the story of lawyer Kantilal Sahni as he uncovers a colonial conspiracy during the British Raj. Taaruk Raina is seen as Kantilal Sahni in the show. The star cast also includes Sahil Mehta, Man Singh Karamati, Ananyabrata Chakravorty, Raj Jadon, Dev Raaz, Nikita Dutta, Carl Wharton, and Paul McEwan.
