Ram Madhvani's web show, The Waking of a Nation, recently premiered on SonyLIV. Starring Taaruk Raina, Nikita Dutta and Sahil Mehta, the web show is set against the backdrop of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. It attempts to reimagine the history through the Hunter commission. In a new interview, Ram revealed the thought behind incorporating a story of four friends in a larger story of independence.
In an interview with Mid-Day, Ram Madhvani reflected on his research work for The Waking of a Nation. The filmmaker also revealed that he took the liberty to present a story of four friends in the series. When asked about it, Ram shared the thought behind the tale of 4 friends in a larger story of independence.
"It was to showcase the youth caught up in the circumstances of their time and to see what really happened to those who were barely 25 or 28 years old, including [soldiers] who’ve just come back from World War I, it was then called the Great World War," Ram said.
The filmmaker shared that many people fought on Britain's behalf. He noted that a lot of personal stories are a part of The Waking of a Nation because people are interested in that. In his opinion, this factor gave the series, also streaming on OTTplay Premium, an emotional and soulful connection.
Talking about the fictional part of his show, Ram added, "We have taken the liberties to [include] the story of four friends; that is the fictional part of the show. Of course, there are some characters based on truth like General Dyer and Michael O’Dwyer."
The filmmaker further shared that his research included studying everything available in the public domain. "We looked at archival footage, [material] at various archives in London, Amritsar, and Mumbai," stated Ram.
In the past, Ram Madhvani directed projects like Sonam Kapoor Ahuja's Neerja, Kartik Aaryan's Dhamaka and Sushmita Sen's Aarya. All three seasons of Aarya are streaming on JioHotstar. Ram's upcoming project is Dive, backed by his production house Ram Madhvani Films.
