The Wheel of Time renewed for season 2 by Amazon before the series premiere

Rosamund Pike’s talent is enough to score a second season for a show that hasn’t even aired yet. Based on Robert Jordan’s novel series of the same name, The Wheel of Time series at Amazon has been renewed for season two mere days after the production of season one wrapped in Czech Republic.

The Wheel of Time, all set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video, has been an ongoing project since 2018. The plot, set in a fantasy world where select women have access to magic, follows Moiraine (Pike) who is a member of an all female organization called Aes Sedai. She is on a dangerous journey with five comrades, one of whom is destined to be the Dragon Reborn who will be responsible for either saving or destroying humanity.

The popularity of The Wheel of Time novels has led to multiple attempts at an adaptation of the novels by showrunners. A surprise pilot episode for the series, titled Winter Dragon, aired on FXX in 2015. However, the series was not continued beyond that episode.

Showrunner Rafe Judkins has adapted the books for television while Pike has produced the series. The Wheel of Time has been co-produced by Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television.

When asked by Variety how the showrunner feels about the series getting renewed prior to the pilot streaming, he said, “The belief Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television have shown in The Wheel of Time has been incredible to see throughout the entire process of making this show. Getting a second season order before the first season has even premiered is such a vote of confidence in the work we are doing and the property itself, and we couldn’t be happier to be able to continue to live and work in the world Robert Jordan created.”

Amazon is yet to announce the date of release for The Wheel of Time.
