After almost a year of its theatrical release in India, The Woman King is available to stream on OTT. The Marvel film starring Viola Davis is currently streaming on SonyLIV after being available to rent on Prime Video and ZEE5, among other OTT platforms. A historical action-adventure film set in the West African kingdom of Dahomey in the 17th and 19th centuries, The Woman King follows the story of the Agojie, an all-female military corps. The film, set in the 1820s, portrays Davis as a commander who prepares the soldiers of the future to face their foes.

Viola Davis leads as General Nanisca

Davis portrays General Nanisca, a formidable commander of the all-female Dahomeyan legion known as the Agojie. With the help of the youthful King Ghezo (John Boyega), Nanisca leads her army in battles against European invaders and other competing civilizations, like the Oyo. Cast members include Maria Bello of A History of Violence, Thuso Mbedu of The Young Recruit, Lashana Lynch of Lieutenant Izogie, Sheila Atim of Lieutenant Amenza, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin of Santo Ferreira. The screenplay was based on an original idea by Bello.

Dora Milaje, the all-female royal guard assigned to defend Black Panther in Marvel Comics, was inspired by the mythology of the Agojie, who are also called the Dahomey Amazons. Black Panther (2018), which starred the late Chadwick Boseman as the title character and Danai Gurira as Okoye, the leader of the Dora Milaje, brought the fictitious warriors to life on the big screen.

Influence of Black Panther

In an interview on CBS Mornings, Davis elaborated on the role that Black Panther played in the making of The Woman King. According to the Oscar-winning actor, The Woman King would not have been possible without Black Panther, suggesting that Black audiences have historically been disregarded by Hollywood when evaluating a film's fortunes. But Davis hinted that the business rethought its tactics in response to Black Panther's phenomenal financial success, which helped propel The Woman King forward.

Gina Prince-Bythewood is the film's director, and Dana Stevens wrote the screenplay based on a story she co-wrote with Maria Bello. Hero Fiennes Tiffin, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, and John Boyega are among the other stars of the film.
