Benedict Cumberbatch’s The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar won an Oscar for Best Live-Action Short Film at the 96th Academy Awards 2024. Released last year, the film tells a story about a wealthy man named Henry Sugar, who wants to achieve an extraordinary skill to cheat at gambling. He learns about a guru, who can see miracles without his eyes open. Now Sugar wants that power in himself, and hence he tries to meet that guru to master the skill.
The film is based on British author Roald Dahl’s 1977 novel, The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More. The seven stories of the novel were written at various times throughout the author’s life. Two of those stories are autobiographies. While one tells the story about how Dahl became a writer, another describes his experience as a fighter pilot in World War II. The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Three More is the short anthology of the original film, and is now scheduled to release on March 15, 2024, only on Netflix.

Henry Sugar inherits his family fortune, and soon finds out about his deadly addiction for gambling. One day he invents Imdad Khan through some doctor’s reports, a man who claims he could see things without opening his eyes. Soon after learning this, Henry begins practising the skill by flaming a candle, while picturing the most loved person’s face with closed eyes. After three years of practice, Henry can now read the face value of card owners. Later Henry uses his ability at a casino and makes £30,000 at blackjack.
However, being unsatisfied with the earning, he throws off the money from his balcony into the streets of London. Henry decides to travel the world and earn through gambling. Two decades later, Henry dies from a pulmonary embolism, which he knew would cause his death, as he was able to see the clot through his skin.
