In recent years, Malayalam thrillers such as Nayattu, Anjaam Pathiraa, Joji and Drishyam 2 have managed to keep the audience on the edge of their seat. While the pandemic has made space for most films of the genre, Malayalam cinema has been churning out some of the finest thrillers in the past decade.

Be it dark, investigative or slow-burn thrillers, the industry has never been short of subjects to turn into a riveting tale onscreen. Here’s our recommendation of five must-watch thrillers – starring actors such as Prithviraj Sukumaran, Jayasurya, Roshan Mathew, Anna Ben and Shobana – that you can stream on Manorama Max and OTTplay Premium.

Debutant Abhijith Joseph’s riveting thriller revolves around circle inspector John Luther (Jayasurya) who is tasked with investigating the case of a missing person. What starts off as a simple hit-and-run case soon spirals into serial killings. Amid the investigation, John also suffers hearing loss, making it a make-or-break case for the cop who has always prioritized his duty over family.

Starring Roshan Mathew, Anna Ben and Indrajith Sukumaran, Pulimurugan director Vysakh’s crime-thriller revolves around a series of incidents stemming from a car accident. It involves a minister, who is being investigated by the NIA, a journalist who breaks the case, her boyfriend who locks horns with a senior police officer and the latter who has an axe to grind.

If you are a fan of slow-burn thrillers with an emotional layer, then director VK Prakash’s Oruthee, which has Navya Nair and Vinayakan in the lead, will hook you from start till the end. Based on true incidents, the movie revolves around Radhamani, a boat conductor, who seeks justice after a jewellery store cheats her, when she is struggling to make ends meet and needs the money for her daughter’s hospital expenses. How she manages to overcome the challenges form the plot.

Adam Joan

Prithviraj Sukumaran stars in the titular role of a businessman based in Kerala. Seven years after his wife’s death, he finds out that his daughter is kidnapped by a gang in Scotland. As he carries out his probe, Adam learns dark secrets involving Satan worship and how this is connected to his daughter’s kidnapping. The movie also has Narain, Mishti Chakravarthy and Rahul Madhav as part of the cast.

Thira

Shobana essays the role of cardiac surgeon and social worker Rohini Pranab, who along with a youngster, sets out in search of missing girls. But in their pursuit, they get entangled in an illegal human trafficking time and must race against time to save their loved ones. Dhyan Sreenivasan and Deepak Parambol are also part of this Vineeth Sreenivasan directorial.
