Sameer Nair, the man behind hard-hitting series like Criminal Justice, Hostages, Husmukh, Tanaav, Taj: Divided by Blood, and others, is all set to release Nandita Das' directorial film Zwigato in the theatre under his banner Applause Entertainment. The film stars Kapil Sharma in a lead role, and this is their first theatrical release fir Sameer Nair post the pandemic.

During the recent trailer launch of the film, Sameer was asked why he chose to release the film in theatres, at a time when the Hindi film industry is going through a rough patch. With the exception of Shah Rukh Khan's Pathaan, many Hindi films have been doing badly at the box officer.

Sameer explained, "Zwigato is not a niche film, indie film, art house film, or anything of the sort. It is a very mainstream movie. It is the story of common people... of all of us. So, we wanted to release the film in theatres so that a large section of the audience can get access to the story. It will also help us spread the word about the story."

As the narrative of the film is very close to reality, the producer also added that a real story does not mean a sad one. "It is a real story, but it is not a sad film. Also, it is not like The Comedy Night with Kapil Sharma either. It is an observational and situational comedy of all our lives. So, it is an interesting story," said Sameer.

The story of Zwigato revolves around a man Manas, who works in a factory, but lost his job after the pandemic. To survive, he becomes a food delivery executive. His wife Pratima also finds works to earn money to raise their two children.

Zwigato had its premiere at the Busan International Film Festival and at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022. It stars Kapil Sharma, Shahana Goswami, Gul Panag and Swanand Kirkir, and it releases in theatres on March 17.
