Debutant director Nithin Krishnamurthy’s Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare is special on multiple counts, but mainly among them is the fact that he was able to bring audiences back to theatres in droves, with a simple yet zany story that evoked nostalgia in those who’d lived in a hostel at some point. The film’s funny dialogue-led narrative struck a chord with audiences in Karnataka, making it the first bonafide hit of the year.

The team, led by Nithin, recently had a success meet event, which had namma Hattrick hero Shivarajkumar in attendance. The Century Star is, perhaps, the busiest actor in Kannada cinema. He was working on three films back-to-back, namely Ghost, 45 and Bhairathi Ranagal and has a long list of collaborations lined up thereafter. If one were to tally all the new film announcements he’s made on his birthday in the last few years, Shivarajkumar will not have dates to spare for the next 3-4 years, at the least. And yet, despite this choc-a-bloc schedule, he is game to take up some work, provided Nithin obliges. Speaking at that success event, Shivarajkumar told Nithin that he was so impressed by Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare that if the filmmaker were to plan a sequel, the Century Star would absolutely love to do a cameo. Shivarajkumar said that in the sequel, he would love to play a senior from the Hostel or maybe even a professor like what Ramya did in the original.

Released in theatres on July 21, the film had a positive vibe about it owing to the innovative publicity campaign, that even included the late Power Star Puneeth Rajkumar. But it had an uphill task at hand, what with it clashing with the Hollywood biggies Oppenheimer and Barbie. Hostel Hudugaru Bekagiddare, though, managed to hold its ground and do really well, so much so that the team then went ahead and dubbed it in Telugu too, in the hope of recreating the magic in that market. That plan did not work out as expected and subsequently, the film made its OTT debut on Zee5 Kannada.
