Both after the first wave and second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Telugu film industry has lead from the front in helping theatres bounce back to action with a flurry of releases. Theatres across Andhra Pradesh and Telangana opened to packed crowds with five major releases including Thimmarusu, Ishq (Not a Love Story) and Narasimhapuram, to name a few. Among the Telugu films, it was Thimmarusu, starring Satyadev Kancharana, Priyanka Jawalkar, Brahmaji and Ankith Koyya, that drew positive responses from critics and audiences. The film, that earned Rs 50 lakh on day one, was directed by Sharan Koppishetty.
Thimmarusu is expected to make its OTT debut in a few weeks. Now, it's confirmed that streaming giant Netflix has bagged the post-theatrical streaming rights for the Telugu film. However, we're yet to know the exact date on which Thimmarusu will have its digital premiere. The film revolves around a youngster who is framed as the murderer of a cab driver. However, 8 years later, an honest, intelligent lawyer Ramachandra finds a way to reopen the case to nab the true culprit. Ajay and Ravi Babu also play crucial roles in this crime thriller.
For the uninitiated, Thimmarusu is the Telugu remake of the hit Kannada film, titled Birbal Trilogy Case 1: Finding Vajramuni, directed by MG Srinivas. The director also played the lead role in the film (Mahesh Das) in addition to Rukmini Vasanth, Vineet Kumar, Suresh Heblikar and Sujay Shastry, cast in key characters. Birbal Trilogy Case 1: Finding Vajramuni is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Incidentally, another Telugu theatrical release this week, Ishq is also a Malayalam remake of a 2019 release by the same name (streaming on Amazon Prime Video).
