The second instalment was rumoured to get a direct OTT release, but with streamers not picking Kannada content without theatrical outings, the Vijayaprasad film is coming to screens soon.
When Navarasa Nayaka Jaggesh’s Thothapuri Chapter 1 came out in September last year and didn’t create much of an impression at the box office, it was widely expected that the second instalment would go directly to OTT. But with streaming platforms desisting from procuring Kannada content for direct release, the makers have to go the theatrical route. For a while it had been heard that Thothapuri 2 would be an August release, but there was no confirmation, until now.
Earlier today, producer KA Suresh revealed that Thothapuri Chapter 2’s release date has been fixed and the team’s decided to have a head-on clash with none other than Superstar Rajinikanth. While Thothapuri Chapter 1 had released along with Ponniyin Selvan 1 and Kantara, Chapter 2 will be in theatres a day after Nelson’s Jailer on August 11. Jailer is releasing on August 10.
The Vijayaprasad directed Thothapuri Chapter 1 followed four individuals played by Jaggesh, Aditi Prabhudeva, Hema Dutt and Veena Sundar in a tale filled with adult jokes and heavy sentiments. Also in the film were characters played by Suman Ranganathan and Dhananjaya, who will have more defined roles in the next instalment.
Thothapuri Chapter 1 was widely panned for being verbose, sentimental and crass and if Vijayaprasad’s filmography is anything to go by, rest assured that Chapter 2 will follow on similar lines. While Chapter 1 was about the various relationships that are formed and how they evolve against the backdrop of religion and harmony, Chapter 2 will close some of the open ends and introduce a few fresh sub-narratives and characters. The last moments of Thothapuri Chapter 1 serve as trailer of sorts for what to expect in the second instalment. If you’ve not seen Thothapuri Chapter 1 yet, it is available to stream on Zee5 Kannada.
