One of the Kannada film releases tomorrow is Navarasa Nayaka Jaggesh’s Thothapuri – Part 1. The film pairs the 59-year-old actor with Aditi Prabhudeva, who is less than half his age and is directed by Vijayaprasad, who is fresh off the failure of his last movie, Petromax. Thothapuri is, however, the filmmaker’s second collaboration with Jaggesh, after the adult comedy Neerdose. Vijayaprasad has sort of created a brand of cinema that is synonymous with double-meaning jokes and not meant for family viewing. In fact, his Petromax that came out earlier this year was rated A, while Thothapuri, despite the heavy dose of adult humour, has gotten away with a lighter U/A certification.

Although online booking for the September 30 release began a couple of days ago, the response to it has been quite tepid. “Tired of watching this type of Genre. This Director should stop working on such movies and focus on different genre. Using the same formula in all the movies will make the audience,” wrote Akash Dixit on social media, while another user, Prashant, added, “Double meaning films are dead. Already audience watched this kind of movies. Jaggesh should come out of this genre. Petromax was one of the latest example.”

The overwhelming sentiment on social media is that the actor and filmmaker are presenting yet another vulgar film, which is releasing at the wrong time, when there are better films like Ponniyin Selvan and Kantara, both of which are steeped in the culture and ethos of their respective lands. Netizens also reckoned that Thothapuri would be a washout at the box office, and would, therefore, be better off on OTT.

The film, which will apparently have a second part, also stars Suman Ranganathan, Veena Sundar, Hema Dutt and Dhananjaya in pivotal roles. It has music by Anoop Selin.
