In the two days that director Tharun Moorthy’s maiden collaboration with Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, Thudarum, has been in theatres, the film is reported to have made Rs 16 crore gross at the box office. A little more than Rs 12.25 cr of this has come from Kerala, with the second highest contribution coming from Karnataka. Having nearly doubled its Day 1 show count on Day 2 in Bengaluru, Thudarum also showed a corresponding in its revenue on Saturday.

According to industry trackers, Thudarum began its theatrical run with around 126 shows, which went up to 214 on Day 2 and 324 by Sunday, Day 3. On release day, the film raked in Rs 0.5 cr, which went up to Rs 1.24 cr on Day 2. Day 3 is expected to be even better, as Thudarum recorded an all-time record of 187 fast-filling/sold out shows on its first Sunday, bettering the 147 show count of L2 Empuraan.

In the other centres, Thudarum has had only marginal betterment in performance. The AP/Telangana figures, for instance, went up from Rs 0.1 cr on Day 1 to Rs 0.4 cr on Day 2; in Tamil Nadu it was Rs 0.25 cr and Rs 0.55 cr respectively, with the rest of India contributing Rs 0.15 cr and then Rs 0.65 cr. The film’s box office is expected to have a slow-down on its first Monday, although the advance bookings in Kerala are said to be in the Rs 4 cr range, according to trackers.

Meanwhile, Thudarum, by Operation Java and Saudi Vellakka maker Tharun is said to be a family drama thriller that pairs Mohanlal with Shobana. The makers had downplayed the thriller aspect of the story during the promotions to avoid obvious comparisons to Drishyam. What has clicked with audiences is Mohanlal’s performance as Benz Shanmukham, which they reckon heralds the return of the complete actor.
