Mohanlal’s Thudarum, one of the highest-grossing Malayalam films of the year, narrates a revenge tale as Benz goes down a path of vengeance after his stepson is killed by George sir. Tharun Moorthy’s third directorial after Saudi Vellakka, Thudarum, has landed on JioHotstar on May 30, 2025. As the excited OTT audience laps up the movie, we look at what happened in the pulsating climax of Thudarum, which delved into themes of honour killing and the pursuit of justice. And whether Thudarum ended with the promise of a sequel after Benz is arrested for killing George Sir. (Spoilers ahead, if you have yet to watch the movie)
Thudarum revolves around Shanmugham, who is called as Benz by everyone including his wife Lalitha (Shobana), children Pavi (Thomas Mathew) and daughter Pavithra. The jovial cab driver’s happy life gets upended when his car is seized by the cops for no fault of his, and from then on Thudarum turns into a thriller with twists and turns at almost every point.
Thudarum changes its shades once George Sir (a brilliant Prakash Varma in his acting debut) enters the picture. Though he initially warms up to Benz, it is slowly revealed that George sir had killed Pavi as he was in love with his daughter Mary. In a dramatic twist, the cops had dumped the body in the trunk of Benz’s ambassador. But when they realise that Pavi is in fact Benz’s stepson, they try to turn the tables on him, declaring to the media that it was Benz who killed Pavi as he misbehaved with his own daughter.
However, once Benz, a former stuntman in the movies, learns that Pavi was the victim hidden in his car, he goes after the police. Though they lock him up, Benz fights his way out in a thrilling scene at the police station with the now-viral ‘leap’.
The final scenes show how George sir tortured Pavi for daring to romance his daughter. But as George sir goes after his family, Benz reminds the senior cop that he, too, has a daughter. The climax portions play out at George sir’s house, as Benz brutally thrashes him before killing him. As Benz seeks revenge, George Sir’s daughter Mary is seen looking out from the window.
Unlike Drishyam, another Mohanlal-starrer, Benz does not escape the clutches of law and is led away by the police even as his family, along with Mary, looks on. The end credits appear on screen, hinting that a sequel is on the cards. However, Thudarum director Tharun Moorthy had categorically stated to OTTplay that the team currently has no plans for a sequel.
Well, but as they say, never say never. So let's wait and see if Thudarum does get a sequel, which we hope will have a more happy ending. Tharun had also recently shared a photo of Mohanlal from Thudarum, with a caption #tobecontinued (which is also the English translation of the movie title), leading to speculations of a second instalment.
