Tharun Moorthy won critical acclaim for his first two movies, Operation Java and Saudi Vellakka. But it was his third directorial venture Thudarum, starring Mohanlal, that made him a household name in Kerala and put him in the league of star directors. In a recent chat with OTTplay, Tharun Moorthy opened up about working with Mohanlal, pointing out that one standout feature of The Complete Actor.
Tharun Moorthy’s Thudarum, which released in theatres on April 25 to an overwhelming response, is now all set to make its OTT premiere on JioHotstar on May 30, 2025. During the film’s stellar theatrical run, Tharun had spoken to OTTplay about the iconic actor, who has been in the Malayalam industry for more than four decades.
When asked about the one standout feature of Mohanlal, Tharun Moorthy immediately replied, “The professionalism he has shown throughout the film.”
Explaining further, Tharun said that the actor remained fully committed to the movie even when their shooting got extended by 10-12 days beyond what had been planned. “The way he approached the movie, and how he stood with the movie. He is a 100% professional. More than anything else, the film is what matters,” Tharun added
He further remarked that Mohanlal has been a textbook example for him on “how a superstar should be or how a super actor should approach a movie”.
When OTTplay asked Tharun to pick his favourite Mohanlal moment from the film, the young director said, “Performance-wise, there are several moments that I really like. I particularly liked the emotional scene in the bathroom, when he cried and fell on the floor.
Mohanlal stars as ‘Benz’ Shanmugham, who takes the path of vengeance when his happy life with his wife and two children is disrupted by the actions of George Sir. Along with the Lucifer star, the film also features Shobana as his wife Lalitha. Prakash Varma appears as the villainous cop, George sir.
