‘After a long time, a Mohanlal film that fully satisfies’ – this tweet more or less captures the collective sentiment of fans who’ve just seen the first-day-first-show of the Malayalam superstar’s latest, Thudarum. Directed by Tharun Moorthy, who’s made Operation Java and Saudi Vellakka earlier, Thudarum, according to the filmmaker is a family drama, a description he deemed fit to avoid obvious Drishyam comparisons. The film, according to audiences is a thriller, but what makes it an absolute stand-out is that it brings Mohanlal the complete actor back.
Thudarum, based on a plot by KR Sunil, that Tharun developed, released in theatres on April 25, 2025, making it the second release for Mohanlal after L2: Empuraan, the sequel of Lucifer , which, dropped on OTT a day earlier. The response to the film has been overwhelmingly positive, with comments suggesting that Mohanlal has a blockbuster loading. Netizens have begun urging the makers not to sell remake rights, and instead dub Thudarum in other languages at the earliest and release it in those centres.
What has also excited hardcore Lal fans is that Tharun has used the opportunity given to him to show how a fanboy movie has to be made. While Mohanlal has delivered his absolute best, his combination with Shobana, who returns to cinema after a few years, oozes a special kind of charm, they reckon. Also impressive is Jakes Bejoy’s music, which audiences say is the backbone of the film.
Earlier in the day, the first half reports of Thudarum were just as positive, with netizens opining that Tharun managed to weave together a screenplay that was equal doses intensity and emotion and kept audiences glued to their seats from the word go. Interestingly, this time around, netizens seem to have refrained from posting spoilers about the film on social media, to encourage people to watch OG Mohanlal back in action on the big screen.
