Thug Life box office collection day 2: Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam film sees more than 50% drop in earnings

Thug Life starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Mani Ratnam has been in the news for a while now. After a pan-Indian promotional tour and much expectations, the film hit theatres on Thursday. However, contrary to the anticipations, the gangster action drama did not fare well. The box office collection of Thug Life after two days stands at Rs 22.6 crore in India including all languages.

Thug Life is a 2025 Tamil gangster action-drama film headlined by Kamal Haasan in the lead role. The film is directed by Mani Ratnam and their reunion after 38 years since the release of Nayakan was met with much anticipations and expectations. However, Thug Life has left many disappointed and this has reflected on the box office collection.

As per Sacnilk report, the film collected Rs 17 crore on the first day. While this itself falls below Indian 2 and Vikram ’s day one collections, the second day of Thug Life has witnessed a massive drop. The collections have halved with the Vettaiyaadu Villaiyaadu star’s movie only minting Rs 7 crore on day two. This collection includes whole of India except for Karnataka where the film did not release due to Kamal Haasan’s refusal to seek apology after his comments on Kannada triggered a backlash.

Besides the Panchathanthiram star, Thug Life also features Simbu, Trisha, Ashok Selvan, Nasser, Joju George, Abhirami, Aishwarya Lekshmi and others. The film will stream on Netflix only eight weeks after the release. Thug Life is produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and Madras Talkies.

While AR Rahman’s album was met with positive reception, the writing of Thug Life was heavily critcised. The film revolves around an aging gangster who adopts a child during a shootout and names him his heir as he grows up. However, when betrayal and jealously creeps in, their lives take a turn.
