While we had previously reported that Netflix has bagged the post-theatrical streaming rights of the recently released Tamil film Thug Life, the initial OTT deal was that the film will premiere on the platform only after eight weeks of theatrical run. However, with the results of Thug Life being disappointing, it is now expected that the Kamal Haasan-Mani Ratnam film will now land on Netflix sooner than the agreed period.
Thug Life starring Kamal Haasan and directed by Mani Ratnam, was one of the Tamil films this year with huge expectations. However, the film did not do well at the box office and critically after it failed to impress the audience. Due to this, it is reported that Netflix is considering to cancel the eight-week window period for the OTT premiere.
Before the release of Thug Life, the Papanasam star had said in a media event that Netflix has agreed to premiere the film after eight weeks of theatrical run. He also added that it will make the industry healthy and is a “pragmatic thing to do”. However, soon after the release of Thug Life, the film did not resonate well with the audience. The box office too has not been performing well. In light of this, it is reported that Netflix is considering to cancel the eight-week deal. Negotiations are on to premiere the film soon. An OTT release date is yet to be announced.
Coming from filmmaker who had made iconic films like Anjali , Roja and Alaipayuthey, Thug Life also stars actors Simbu, Trisha, Ashok Selvan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Nasser, Abhirami and others. The film has so far collected Rs 85 crore at the box office worldwide. Produced by Raaj Kamal Films International and Madras Talkies, Thug Life is a gangster action drama with music by AR Rahman.
