From fans of Mammootty to Malavika Mohanan, this week has enough in store in Malayalam cinema to please all sections of audience. Some eagerly anticipated films such as Nivin Pauly’s Thuramukham and Asif Ali’s Maheshum Marutiyum are finally hitting theatres, while the OTT platforms too have content from Mammootty’s Christopher to Roshan Mathew and Swasika Vijay’s erotic thriller Chathuram streaming.

With as many as six releases on OTT and in theatres, fans of Malayalam cinema will be spoilt for choice as to which film to pick for their weekend watch. Here’s a list of the latest Malayalam releases that will make your job easier.

Thuramukham

Director Rajeev Ravi’s period film revolves around the protests against the inhuman chappa system that was practised in Cochin Port from the 1900s to 1953. The film spans from the 1930s to the communist party-led protests in 1953 to abolish the practise of tossing a metal coin, with labourers having to fight among themselves to retrieve it for the right to work. Nivin Pauly, Joju George, Indrajith Sukumaran, Darshana Rajendran, Arjun Ashokan, Manikandan, Sudev Nair and Poornima Indrajith are part of its cast.

Christy

Release platform: Sony LIV

After Roy’s grades continue to fall, his aunt pushes him to take tuition classes from Christy, who has just secured her divorce. The initially reluctant Roy soon becomes a pillar of support for Christy, but the latter also develops feelings for her. What happens when he finally confesses his love? Malavika Mohanan and Mathew Thomas play the leads in Alvin Henry’s directorial debut, which is based on his life.

Maheshum Marutiyum

Release platform: Theatre

Mahesh’s life in his formative years had been defined by his Maruti 800, which was the first car in the village and won him a lot of attention. But after a woman named Gauri enters his life, he is forced to make new choices. Asif Ali, Mamta Mohandas and Maniyanpilla Raju star in this feel-good entertainer, which is helmed by Sethu.

Chathuram

Release platform: Saina Play

Newlywed Selena has to endure the sexual and physical abuse of her husband Eldho, till an accident renders him bedridden. She then hires a home nurse, Balathazar, to look after him. But with time, the duo become romantically involved and the ‘forbidden’ relationship prompts them to take extreme steps that will have far-reaching ramifications on the trio’s lives. Swasika Vijay, Alencier Ley Lopez and Roshan Mathew star in Sidharth Bharathan’s erotic thriller.

Khali Purse of Billionaires

Release platform: Theatres

Two youngsters decide to strive to make their dreams come true through their start-up, which they begin in the confines of their house. But financial and familiar pressures force them to take an illegal step to make some quick bucks. How will this affect their dreams? Dhyan Sreenivasan, Aju Varghese, Arjun Ashokan and Tanvi Ram star in the film, helmed by Maxwell Jose.

Christopher

Release platform: Amazon Prime Video

Police officer Christopher believes in taking the law into his own hands to ensure that justice is delivered swiftly, especially for crimes against women. However, one such case has him butting heads with a man who decides to go after those Christopher cares for. Mammootty, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Amala Paul, Sneha and Vinay Rai star in this investigative thriller, which is helmed by B Unnikrishnan.
