Even Nivin Pauly’s die-hard fans, who took to the actor after watching his performances in movies such as Thattathin Marayathu, Premam, Action Hero Biju and 1983, wouldn’t have expected his power-packed performance in Geetu Mohandas’ Moothon that released back in 2019.

The movie was a revelation for Nivin too, having to attend acting workshops, learn several languages including Jeseri and get trained in Hindi diction as well as be exposed to a different kind of filmmaking.

The director of his latest movie Thuramukham, Rajeev Ravi, had served as a cinematographer in the film and Nivin had been vocal about how “it was a learning experience”, shooting amid the “hustle and bustle with close to 100 people”. The actor had also stated that “it was the most emotionally draining role” that he had done, till then.

Thuramukham, which took shape right after Moothon was completed in 2018, had him essaying a raw and intense character once again. In a recent interview with OTTplay, Nivin admitted that the workshops he had been part of during Moothon helped ease into his character of Moidu in Thuramukham, which is set to begin streaming on Sony LIV and OTTplay Premium on April 28.

“Rajeevettan just wants you to turn up as the character. He doesn’t even want you to learn the dialogues by rote. He wants you as a raw character. All those processes that you have in your mind, he wants you to forget all of that and be at ease,” Nivin said.

The actor also said that having done Moothon earlier, he knew about Rajeev’s process. “He would guide us with absolute clarity and give us complete freedom,” he said.

The filmmaker, however, said that contrary to his usual method, he did approach the movie differently. Rajeev said that the movie was mounted on a big scale and involved huge crowds. “So, it required a lot of planning,” the director added.
