Malayalam star Nivin Pauly's latest movie Thuramukham is set to premiere on SonyLiv on April 28. The making of Thuramukham was a collaborative effort by some of the most talented actors and technicians in the Malayalam film industry. Director Rajeev Ravi is known for his unique style of filmmaking that blends realism and grit with a sense of poetry and beauty. He has previously directed critically acclaimed films such as Annayum Rasoolum and Kammattipaadam.

The script for Thuramukham was written by Gopan Chidambaram, who drew inspiration from the play of the same name — written by his father K. M. Chidambaran. The movie chronicles the life of workers in the Cochin harbour during the 1940s and also sheds a light on the inhuman nature of the Chappa system, its transition into modern India and the fight of workers against the oppressive system.

The film's ensemble cast is another highlight of the movie. Nivin has delivered a standout performance as the lead character Moidu. Nivin has ditched his usual charming image to play a rather dark character that embodies the moral corruption of the time. As a matter of fact, Nivin's character could be described as one of the villain roles in the movie. However, the movie is quite empathic to circumstances that influence Moidu's selfish actions, greed and utter indifference to his loved ones.

Thuramukham also has notable performances by Poornima Indrajith, who has played the role of Moidu's mother. She has delivered a career-best performance as a single mother rising three kids in one of the most volatile periods in the history of Kerala. Poornima had also gained 12 kgs to play the older version of her character. And surprisingly, Poornima's character arc extends beyond our expectations. Nimisha Sajayan's performance in the role of a gritty lone young girl in a moral wasteland is also noteworthy.

Thuramukham is technically a briliant movie. Besides writing and directing Rajeev Ravi also shot the movie. The visual style captures the age of darkness in Kerala in the most gripping manner. The movie was selected twice for the prestigious Rotterdam Festival. However, the filmmakers were not able to send it to the festival for various reasons. The movie's theatrical release was also delayed many times owing to several reasons. And it was finally released in cinemas on March 10 this year. Even though it received good reviews, the movie didn't make a dent at the box office.

Nonetheless, Thuramukham is a powerful film that highlights an important event in the history of India's working-class struggle. The film's realistic portrayal of the period, along with its strong performances and direction, make it a must-watch.
