Within a few days, Nivin Pauly’s much awaited Thuramukham will finally make its way onto the big screen. The Rajeev Ravi directorial will chronicle the story of the ‘chappa’ system which was prevalent at Mattancherry harbour in Kochi during the 1940s and 50s, wherein people looking for work were forced to fight amongst themselves for a metal ticket(chappa), which would guarantee them work for that day. The historical drama, that spans the period from the 1930s to the 1950s, will take a deep dive into the inhuman system and the revolution organised by the workers against the same.

The makers of the film recently unveiled its teaser. Less than a minute long, the teaser gives viewers some intense glimpses into how barbaric the system was, with some sequences showing how brutal the workers had to fight to claim a chappa. From the brutality of the practice, a revolution began to brew amongst the workers, who decided to fight back against the injustice done to them.

In addition to Nivin, the film also stars Joju George, Nimisha Sajayan, Arjun Ashokan, Binu Pappuand Indrajith Sukumaran, Poornima Indrajith, Darshana Rajendran, and Sudev Nair in prominent roles. The latter essays the role of the antagonist of the film.

The film, directed by Rajeev Ravi and written by Gopan Chidamabaran, was also inspired by the play of the same name, written by K. M. Chidambaran. The film had witnessed numerous delays in its release over the past three years.

In a recent conversation with OTTplay, the director had spoken of how the film had been mounted on a huge scale, with there being at least 100 people on its sets every day. “It’s different from my previous as it’s a drama that involved huge crowds and was set against a varied landscape. It was an adventurous trip”, said Rajeev.

Thuramukham will be released in cinemas on March 10, 2023. After its theatrical run, the film will be available for streaming on Sony LIV.
