The much-anticipated and long-delayed Rajeev Ravi-directorial Thuramukham will finally hit theatres on June 3. While the makers have been revealing glimpses of the film in the past two years, the trailer of the movie is gearing up to be released soon.

Helmed by the Kammattipaadam director and scripted by Gopan Chidambaram, the film revolves around the chappa system that existed in Kerala during the 1900s till 1960s, when labourers fought unitedly to abolish the practice.

Thuramukham, which is set in the 1940s and 50s, has Nivin Pauly, Indrajith Sukumaran, Joju George, Poornima Indrajith, Darshana Rajendran, Nimisha Sajayan and Arjun Ashokan as part of its cast. Sudev Nair plays the antagonist in the film, which revolves around the system that had labourers fighting among themselves to acquire a coin that provided them the right to work.

The cruel practice came into existence in the 1900s, especially in the 1920s during the construction of Kochi harbour when 1000s of labourers had gathered in front of contractors’ offices for labour work. The movie, which has Nivin playing a labourer from Mattanchery, showcases how the workers’ plight and how they eventually revolted against the practice. Thuramukham's trailer will be released on May 22 - exactly a year after its teaser release.

The film will mark Rajeev Ravi’s second successive directorial to release in a span of a week. The filmmaker also has Asif Ali and Sunny Wayne’s Kuttavum Shikshayum hitting theatres on May 27. The movie, which is about a group of cops who travel from Kerala to Uttar Pradesh to nab the culprits of jewellery robbery case, is again inspired by a true incident that happened in the life of its scriptwriter and policeman Sibi Thomas.

Incidentally, both Nivin and Asif, who play the leads in Thuramukham and Kuttavum Shikshayum respectively, will also have another release in June with Mahaveeryar. The movie is directed by Abrid Shine and is touted to be a time-travel fantasy satire.
