Thursday Special is an acclaimed, award-winning short film presented by renowned filmmakers Shoojit Sircar and Vikramaditya Motwane. Directed by National Award winner Varun Tandon, it is a gentle, intimate drama that explores themes of love, companionship, and aging.

The film centres on Ram and Shakuntala, an elderly married couple whose lives are shaped by a cherished weekly tradition. Set in a mundane setting, this story delves deep into their daily lives, which are deeply rooted in their mutual affection for food and a special routine they have every Thursday.

Thursday Special is described as a tender exploration of love and companionship, highlighting the beauty of the everyday moments of a long-lasting marriage. Anubha Fatehpuria and Ramakanth Dayama play the elderly couple, Shakuntala and Ram.

Notably, Thursday Special won the Most Poetic Film Award at Serbia's Küstendorf Film Festival 2025, personally selected by director Emir Kusturica. It also won Best Narrative Short at the New York Indian Film Festival. The film has already won over 25 awards globally.

Vikramaditya Motwane on Thursday Special

Speaking about Thursday Special, Motwane told Variety, “When I watched ‘Thursday Special’, I was struck by the fact that though all the stories we tell are human stories, we tend to forget that there are so many other stories out there in the mundane, and in the lives of people who you would not expect to have unique stories."

He added that it is a film that people can talk about and discuss, and not just from an aesthetic perspective. "While it’s beautifully directed and performed, it is truly special in terms of pure story, pure feeling,” Motwane added.
