Tom Cruise’ Top Gun: Maverick is—other than creating a major stir at the global box office just recently—making noise yet again!
It so happened that the year 2022 is coming to an end and the lists of ‘bests’ and ‘worsts’ of this year have started to surface. And, on Thursday, the National Board of Review announced its yearly compilation of Best Films of 2022 and Tom Cruise’ action drama is right on top.
Top Gun: Maverick is a sequel to the megastar’s 1986 film Top Gun, and is considered one of the biggest global hits of 2022.
The film has also taken home the award for outstanding achievement in cinematography.
"Top Gun: Maverick is a thrilling crowd-pleaser that is expertly crafted on every level. Tom Cruise, Joseph Kosinski, and the entire filmmaking team have succeeded in making an incredibly popular film that brought audiences back to theaters, while at the same time being a full-on cinematic achievement," Annie Schulhof, National Board of Review President, said in a statement that was reportedly obtained by PEOPLE on Thursday.
Steven Spielberg won the Best Director award for The Fabelmans, Colin Farrell took home the Best Actor’s trophy for The Banshees of Inisherin while Michelle Yeoh was given the Best Actress award for Everything Everywhere All At Once.
NBR will be giving away the awards to this year's winners at an event to be hosted by NBC News' Willie Geist on January 8, 2023, in New York City, as per a report by PEOPLE.
The film is currently available for rental and purchase on digital, plus DVD and Blu-ray, and it becomes available to stream on Paramount+ starting Dec. 22.
After the massive success of Top Gun: Maverick, fans of the franchise are already asking for a third installment, including some cast members.
"There's definitely been conversations (but) it's above my pay grade. It's really up to Tom. It's up to Jerry. It's up to all the powers that be, but if they call me back to Miramar, I'll be there,” Glen Powell said about his desire to come back for Top Gun to PEOPLE back in August of this year.
