Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible 7 and 8 release delayed due to pandemic

Tom Cruise’s latest series of outrageous spy assignments will take a while to hit the big screens. As a result of the worsening pandemic situation, the release of Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8 will be delayed.

According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter, the new release dates for the seventh and eighth instalments are July 14, 2023, and June 28, 2024. The films were originally scheduled for release in September this year and July next year.

The latest instalment in the popular spy action franchise has witnessed several snags in its release and production due to the uncertain situation regarding the pandemic. Mission: Impossible 7 had earlier delayed its production and release several times before as well.

The upcoming sequels will be helmed by Christopher McQuarrie. The Academy Award-winning filmmaker has also directed previous instalments in the franchise, including Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018).

The director also has Top Gun: Maverick awaiting release, another Cruise starrer, which had also been delayed in its release due to the pandemic last year. The film is a sequel to the 1986 film, Top Gun.

Cruise returns in the Mission Impossible sequels as agent Ethan Hunt, a role he has been essaying for almost 25 years since the franchise started with the 1996 film. The films are known for their over-the-top, death-defying stunts, which include Cruise dangling from the Burj Khalifa and holding onto a moving plane.

The rest of the cast features Rebecca Ferguson, Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Henry Czerny, Simon Pegg, Vanessa Kirby, Angela Bassett, Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, Rob Delaney, and Charles Parnell.
