An adaptation of the Swedish comedy A Man Called Ove has been in the works since 2017. The movie will now officially start with Hollywood veteran Tom Hanks in the lead and directed by Marc Forster.

While Hanks has been mentioned with the movie as the lead ever since its first announcement, the Hollywood star and his wife Rita Wilson will serve as producers on the project.

David Magee, the Academy Award nominated writer who has previously worked on movies such as Life of Pi and Finding Neverland will pen the story of the adaptation.

The unnamed project is based on the hit 2012 Swedish comedy novel, which spent 77 consecutive weeks on the New York Times bestseller list, selling over 7 million copies worldwide.

An official Swedish film adaptation of the novel was released in 2015 and became a massive hit and received rave reviews. The film adaptation, which also became one of the biggest hits in the country, went on to win two Academy Award nominations.

The story follows a grumpy old man called Ove who spends his retired life in isolation, visiting his wife’s grave and enforcing block association rules. Having finally given up on life, a friendship starts to form with the new neighbors.

While not much information is available on the adaptation, the Tom Hanks starrer will go on floors this year and more information is expected to be released shortly.

This will be the first time Marc Forster will be working with the Hollywood legend, and the director is a big fan of the novel. Forster has previously helmed movies such as Monster's Ball, The Kite Runner, Quantum of Solace and World War Z.
