The Sandman is one of the most popular fantasy series on Netflix, based on the 1989–1996 comic book written by Neil Gaiman and published by DC Comics. As per Variety, showrunner Allan Heinberg shared that the decision to end the series was made early in the process. "The Sandman series has always been focused exclusively on Dream's story, and back in 2022 when we looked at the remaining Dream material from the comics, we knew we only had enough story for one more season," he said in a statement.
The publication also mentioned that the release schedule for The Sandman Season 2 will not be affected by the cancellation and the episodes are still set for a 2025 release.
The report also mentioned that the decision to end The Sandman was made before recent accusations against author Neil Gaiman surfaced. As per sources, the show's production team had already planned for Season 2 to be its final installment.
Meanwhile, allegations against Neil first made headlines last summer on a Tortoise Media podcast. A New York magazine article in January included allegations of assault, abuse, and coercion by eight women, but Neil responded with a blog post denying any wrongdoing.
