Young Adult fiction, with its lovable protagonists, concise and simple plots and happy resolutions, are the most apt guilty pleasure reads during the holidays. But if you are not exactly a bibliophile, but a fan of YA fiction, here is a curated list of films and shows based on young adult novels.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

A 2019 American horror film based on the children’s book series of the same name by Alvin Schwartz, the movie stars Zoe Colletti, Michael Garza and Gabriel Rush in lead roles. The plot depicts three friends who walk into a haunted mansion, where once a young girl named Sarah Bellows used to reside. The friends discover a book of horror written by her, but soon enough, the horrifying tales in the book start playing out in real life. 

Moxie

A 2021 American dramedy film adapted from a 2015 novel of the same name by Jennifer Mathieu. This film surrounding a feminist magazine stars Hadley Robinson, Alycia Pascual-Peña and Amy Poehler in lead roles. The story follows a shy teen girl Vivian who gets inspired by her rebellious mother Lisa and her new friend Lucy. Vivian publishes an anonymous magazine to call out sexism at her school.

Panic

A 2021 American teen television 10 episode series is based on the novel of the same name by Lauren Oliver. It stars Olivia Welch, Mike Faist and Jessica Sula in the lead roles. The plot is set in a small town in Texas called Carp, where a group of senior graduates risk their lives to participate in the town’s annual panic competition. The winner walks out with a cash prize of $50,000, but the catch is to confront their deepest fears in the game in order to win. However, losing would cost them their life.

To All the Boys: Always and Forever

An American teen rom-com movie released this year is adapted from Jenny Han's 2017 novel Always and Forever, Lara Jean. The movie is the third installment in the To All the Boys franchise and stars Lana Condor and Noah Centineo in main roles. The movie that continues its plot from the previous one showcases the concluding love story of Lara Jean and Peter Kavinsky. Now in the senior year of high school, Lara has to decide whether her choice of college would be impacted by Kavinsky’s presence in her life.

The Fear Street trilogy

A set of three American teen thriller movies in different timelines consisting of varying subgenres of horror are based on a book series by R L Stine of the same name. The movie with a varied ensemble cast has an overall story that revolves around teenagers who attempt to break the curse that has been prevailing over their town for a long time.

Shadow and Bone

A 2021 American fantasy television show that is adapted from Leigh Bardugo’s books. The show stars Jessie Mei Li, Archie Renaux and Ben Barnes in the lead and follows a cartographer named Alina Starkhov residing in a war-ravaged world. She soon realises that her extraordinary powers could be an aid to set her homeland free from a dangerous entity Shadow Fold. After the roaring success of the first instalment, the much awaited season 2 is all set to follow soon.
