Tovino Thomas’ Dear Friend OTT release date revealed! Here’s when to stream the mystery thriller on Netflix

Minnal Murali star Tovino Thomas has back-to-back releases on Netflix. Soon after the OTT platform announced that it will be streaming the actor’s latest theatrical release Vaashi, we now know that Netflix will also drop his mystery thriller Dear Friend in July.

The latter, which is directed by Vineeth Kumar, hit theatres on June 10, a week prior to Vaashi’s release. The film revolves around a gang of friends – essayed by Tovino, Darshana Rajendran, Basil Joseph, Arjun Radhakrishnan, Arjun Lal and Sanchana Natarajan – who are based in Bengaluru. How an incident that stems from one of them going missing leads to the strain in their relationships with each other form the plot of the film, which is scripted by Suhas, Sharfu and Arjun Lal.

The movie was shot in 2020, right after Tovino and Basil had completed filming Minnal Murali. Bengaluru and Mumbai were its main locations, with the team also shooting for a few days in Kochi. Though the movie had won praise from critics for being a slow-burn thriller about new-age friendships, Dear Friend, which was produced by Samir Thahir, Shyju Khalid and Ashiq Usman, didn’t do well in theatres.

In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Tovino had said that the film was made without underestimating the intelligence of its audience. “I believe it’s a movie that doesn’t follow the usual template. There’s an element of experiment,” said the actor. “It’s about an incident that happens between the friends and how that leads to the unravelling of several secrets that the others weren’t aware of. It’s made as an emotional drama and that’s my favourite genre.”

Dear Friend is set for release on Netflix on July 10. This will be followed by Tovino and Keerthy Suresh’s Vaashi, which is a family cum courtroom drama, exactly a week later on July 17.
