Tovino Thomas’ Thallumaala is off to a rollicking start at the box office. The movie, which hit theatres on August 12, has already collected close to Rs 3.5 crore from Kerala theatres alone on its first day, according to trade analysts.

The movie, which is helmed by Khalid Rahman, is made on a bid budget and a good start was essential for the film’s makers. And it has delivered, especially with the hype that the film had going for it. Thallumaala’s first day collection is also the highest ever for a Tovino-starrer.

Incidentally, the first day collection of Thallumaala eclipsed the lifetime theatrical gross of his previous two movies – Dear Friend and Vaashi, both of which are currently streaming on Netflix. Both the films struggled to cross Rs 1 crore, according to estimates.

Thallumaala’s only competition for the next two weeks will be Kunchacko Boban’s Nna, Thaan Case Kodu which has also received acclaim and could emerge as a popular choice among the family audience as Tovino’s film would be favoured more by the youth.

Special shows have been added for both movies – a heartening trend for Mollywood, which has seen a revival of sorts after a lull with star-driven movies such as Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Kaduva, Fahadh Faasil’s Malayankunju and Nivin Pauly’s Mahaveeryar. Both Nna, Thaan Case Kodu and Thallumaala’s performance in the theatres would also boost the confidence of the big-ticket releases lined up for this Onam season that includes Nivin’s Padavettu, Prithviraj’s Gold and Siju Wilson’s Pathonpathaam Noottaandu.

Thallumaala, which also has Kalyani Priyadarshan, Shine Tom Chacko, Lukman Avaran and Swati Das, is an all-out entertainer told through innovative editing and visuals, with the scuffles in the protagonist’s life driving the storyline. In an earlier interview with OTTplay, Tovino had said that Thallumaala has one of his best performances. “It’s an out-and-out entertainer. And if you look at the previous films of its filmmaker and scriptwriters, you would know that they would never compromise on the quality,” he said.
