Television shows set in high-school often have the unique ability to send audiences on a trip down memory lane as they reminisce about the good old college days. From triggering memories of first love to crushing breakups to those times when peer pressure compelled one to resort to pull ridiculous stunts. Yes, we’ve all been there. So for today’s List hai toh hit hai, we have curated a list of TV shows that are high on nostalgia.

Created by Ashim Ahluwalia, the drama series Class is the Hindi adaptation of the popular Netflix Spanish series Elite. The series premiered in 2023, and follows the lives of three students from a working-class background who are enrolled in the fictional Hampton International School where the wealthy and affluent send their children. The plot focuses on several themes including neglect and various forms of discrimination that’s commonplace in India. Anjali Sivaraman, Gurfateh Pirzada, Piyush Khati, Madhyama Segal, Cwaayal Singh, and Zeyn Shaw essay prominent roles in this tense drama series.

 Staff Room

While most titles on this list feature stories from the perspective of the students, the Amazon Mini TV series, Staff Room allows us a peek into the lives and experiences of teachers. Tushar Pandey, Simran Sharma, and Srishti Dixit play high school teachers in Staff Room as they navigate through the various hurdles of teaching impressionable teenagers. The story is set in the fictional Janaki Prakash Public School in New Delhi, and it also focuses on the personal lives of those trying to impart knowledge to the next generation.

The series is set in one such fictional coaching centres, and focuses on the life of a boy named Vaibhav as he prepares to attempt the Joint Entrance Examination to secure a seat in the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology. Mayur More essays the lead role as the young IIT aspirant who struggles to keep up with the pressure of delivering on his potential and the precarious life of a teenager on the cusp of adulthood.

School Days: The Backbenchers

The comedy drama series is a coming-of-age story revolving around the lives of three friends Jasmine, Bhuvam, and Prerak. The trio have a reputation of being the troublesome ‘backbenchers’ of the class, but they have also crafted an image of being the cool kids of their class. Tanya Maniktala, Manan Madaan, and Sahil Verma play the lead roles in this one.

Sex Education

The British comedy drama series Sex Education features an ensemble cast of Asa Butterfield, Emma Mackey, Ncuti Gatwa, and Gillian Anderson in lead roles. The plot revolves around Butterfield’s character Otis, a teenager who decides to use his knowledge to educate his peers on safe sex. Created by Laurie Nunn, the series received critical acclaim upon release, and the fourth season is expected to release later this year.

Created by Sam Levinson, Euphoria, is arguably the most popular title on this list. And unlike the other TV shows on the list, it is a darker and grim coming-of-age story that follows its protagonist, Rue Bennette, as she struggles with her addiction and her relationships. The series also explores the lives of those around Rue, such as Cassie, Jules, Maddy, Fezco, Nate, Kat, and Lexi. The series is renowned for its striking imagery and sound, explicit scenes, and unfiltered, yet surreal, take on high schoolers in the US. The series stars Zendaya in the lead role.

The most critically-acclaimed TV show in this list is undoubtedly the 2022 Netflix original series, Heartstopper. The series follows teenagers Nick and Charlie, who begin to realise that their friendship could be a budding romance. The coming-of-age drama received widespread acclaim for its nuanced depiction of queer love. Created by Alice Oseman, the series stars Kit Connor and Joe Locke in lead roles.
