Udaipur Files Release Date OUT: When to watch Vijay Raaz's film on Kanhaiya Lal Murder Case

Udaipur Files, which was originally scheduled for a July 11 release, has faced a stay on release. Vijay Raaz's film is based on the 2022 murder of Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal. After a long legal battle, the Delhi High Court on Thursday (August 7, 2025) refused to stay the release of Udaipur Files. The court has dismissed the appeal filed by Mohammad Javed, one of the accused in the murder case, against the order approving the certification of the film.

After the Delhi High Court turned down the plea, Udaipur Files made its way to the theatrical release on August 8 (Friday). A bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela passed the order and added that the petitioner failed to establish a prima facie case in his favour.

“Producer has already spent life earnings in the film and if the movie is not released the balance of convenience will be disturbed. Once a film has been certified by the Board and trial is not likely to be effected by exhibition, we find ourselves unable to agree to prayer for staying release of movie," the bench said.

While allowing the release of the movie, the High Court said that the screening of the film will not cause any harm. “Trial will be conducted by the judge uninfluenced as a trained judge. He has failed to establish how irreparable loss will be caused to him if release is not stayed. Prayer for staying release is hereby rejected," it said.

Senior advocate Menaka Guruswamy, appearing for the accused, told the court that the right to a fair trial is supreme and witnesses are to be examined. Meanwhile, he also added that the film is only going to prejudice the trial, and dialogues are lifted from the charge sheet. "Title itself says Kanhaiya Lal murder. It will affect the trial," he said. The application was opposed by the lawyer representing the government, who said that the authorities exercised their discretion when approving the release of the movie.

Meanwhile, senior advocate Gaurav Bhatia, appearing for the film producer, posted on X, "Big Victory. A major win from the Honorable High Court in the Udaipur Files case! My powerful team. The court refused to impose a ban on the film’s release. A victory for truth, a victory for freedom of expression."
