The eagerly awaited 2022 film Udal, starring Dhyan Sreenivasan and Durga Krishna, has finally been released on an OTT platform. Saina Play is currently streaming the horror drama film, which is directed by debutant Ratheesh Reghunandan. When it was released on May 20 of last year, the film did poorly at the box office and was reportedly having trouble finding an OTT partner.

Following her marriage, Shiny, played by Durga Krishna, gave up her job and is stuck at her husband's house during the lockdown. She is forced to tend to her sick mother-in-law, and the lack of support from others makes her feel suffocated. She has an extramarital affair in the meantime with Kiran, a former collegemate. After a while, they decide to elope, but things fail to go according to plan.

The main plot point of Udal is what occurs next. Indrans portrays an antagonist who is blind and terrorises his daughter-in-law and her partner, ultimately resulting in carnage.

The film also features Jude Anthany Joseph, playing Reji, Shiny’s husband. The director himself has written the screenplay for this horror drama. Manoj Pillai has handled the camera work, while Nishad Yousaf is the editor. The soundtracks for this film were composed by Enthaada Saji and 2018-fame William Francis.

There are rumours that Udal will be remade in Hindi, starring Naseeruddin Shah as Kuttichayan, played by Indrans. It is expected that Ratheesh will be directing the Bollywood version. Gokulam Gopalan, who produced Udal, is rumoured to be financing the Hindi movie.

Delay in OTT release

The founder of Saina Play, Aashiq Bava, stated in an interview with OTTplay that the main cause of the movie's delay was that its producers were in talks to remake Udal in Hindi. As a result, they opted not to release the film on any OTT platforms for the time being.

“However, since its theatrical release was 17 months ago, the streaming platform also had to pay more to resume its promotions due to the OTT release's delay,” he added.
