Real Star Upendra’s much-awaited return to the director’s chair, UI, is now in theatres. The film opened in select single-screen theatres with early morning shows, which were flocked by fans. While an overwhelmingly positive response was expected after the first shows, the first impressions that came had mixed reviews. The morning show confirmed this verdict. Upendra has split his audience into two clear factions – one that absolutely loved every moment of it and another that was not amused by the abundant dose of Uppi-style philosophy.
Hardcore Upendra fans have been calling UI his latest masterpiece. The actor-filmmaker is back with a bang, they said, calling attention to the first half, interval block, the action sequence in the second half, among others. The satire and mass dialogues have worked very well for this set of audience that is also praising Upendra’s one-man show.
UI movie review: Upendra goes into preacher mode overdrive in film that falls short on entertainment
Here are a few comments: “Upendra's 'UI' Presents A Powerful Philosophy – Focus Until 'You And I' See ! #UiTheMovie is Totally a Different Experience”, “Remarkable film in Upendra’s career”, “Thrilling masterpiece’, “Ultimate theatrical experience”, among others.
There are quite a few voices of disappointment too. A few felt that the actor-filmmaker had presented a 2 hour 12 minute long advertisement for his political party, while others were not impressed by the subjects Upendra focused on, whether it is nature, politics or religion, etc. The overall sentiment was that Upendra failed to deliver on entertainment, as he focused more on putting across his thoughts on various issues, to get his audiences also to think and react.

Despite the failings in terms of the making, there were audiences who watched the film strictly for Upendra’s brilliance. UI released in theatres across the world on December 20. In Karnataka, the film had a phenomenal Day 1 opening, but whether or not it sustains this momentum remains to be seen.
