Ullozhukkku, or Undercurrent, is about lies and deceits in a family and how they affect relationships. The heartfelt drama is sustained by the emotional exchange and dynamic between these two characters as they wait for the water to recede so they can bury the person who brought them together. It is impressive that Christo was able to accomplish this on his first try. The skilfully written screenplay and the performances take centre stage.
Anju learns she is pregnant shortly before her husband dies, having spent years of her miserable married life caring for her ailing husband. As soon as secrets come to light, her mother-in-law, Leelamma, tries to find fresh hope in this. The main plot point of the film is how the two women are forced to face themselves and the people they love while floods delay the funeral.
Shebin Benson, Arjun Radhakrishnan, Veena Nair, and Alencier Ley Lopez all have important roles in this project. Ullozhukku has been financed by Ronnie Screwvala, Honey Trehan, and Abhishek Chaubey through their production companies, RSVP and MacGuffin Pictures. Sushin Shyam created the original soundtracks and music for the movie.
