The OTT release of Umbarro, streaming exclusively on ShemarooMe (OTTPlay Premium) from April 24, 2025, has ushered in a flood of joy, change, and touching narratives. Umbarro (meaning "threshold") is a Gujarati comedy-drama directed by the National Award-winning Abhishek Shah. It follows seven women as they make their first-ever overseas trip to London and experience a remarkable voyage. What starts out as a sightseeing trip turns into a moving journey of self-discovery as the women face their fears, societal expectations, and limits, ultimately finding courage, joy, and independence in their own unique ways.

Umbarro: Themes of empowerment and exploration

Exploring themes of empowerment, sisterhood, and personal growth, the film showcases Shah's characteristic sensitivity and vision. In addition to providing a lovely backdrop, the unknown streets of London symbolise the protagonists' internal journeys.

Speaking about his vision for the film, Shah revealed that after directing and producing Hellaro, a film that spoke of self-expression and gave voice to the unheard—he went on, as a producer, to create Kamthaan, a story that explored the conflict between the powerful and the powerless. As a director, he subsequently wanted to produce a humorous story with a serious message: the need for embracing diversity. In Umbarro, Shah aimed to delve into that inflection point in lives when people must make a choice, no matter how large or little, to proceed. In their own unique ways, all of these films explore themes of quiet, hardship, and, finally, the strength that comes from speaking up. Ultimately, what matters is the enjoyment derived from these experiences.

Star-studded ensemble cast

The ensemble cast boasts an impressive roster of actors and actresses, including Sanjay Galsar and Aarjav Trivedi, as well as Deeksha Joshi, Kaajal Oza Vaidya, Sucheeta Trivedi, Tarjanee Bhadla, Tejal Panchasara, and Vineeta Joshee.

Umbarro provided experienced actor Vandana Pathak with a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play a character with strong emotional and experiential roots. Her character Seema Patel reminded her of so many women around—mothers, aunts, neighbours—who have spent their whole lives being carers, never once thinking of their own desires. Umbarro allowed her to pay tribute to those ladies. This is more than a movie; it's a contemplation, a gentle nudge to remember that one may always make their own decisions.

At the same time, working on Umbarro was like therapy for Joshi, who portrays the reflective Anvesha. After the film, she resumed her journaling practice. Because she lacks the bravery to confront her greatest fear, Anvesha is experiencing emotional upheaval. Her character's upbeat demeanour is an unconscious attempt to hide her shyness. It's not often that they come across screenplays that let a woman's journey unfold calmly and truthfully. Joshi thinks this film will inspire many women to do something new, whether it's healing, travelling, or accepting themselves.

Feel-good film

Umbarro provides a unique cinematic experience with its lively mix of comedy, heart, and hope, and it is sure to appeal to women and audiences of all ages.
