What is United Kingdom of Kerala about?

United Kingdom of Kerala follows Malayalis favourite topic – migration to a foreign land in search of greener pastures. Only this time, the protagonist, is not keen on such a move and would rather stay back with friends and family in Kerala. Ranjith plays Tony, who is brought up by a single-dad, after his mother walked out on them for a better life in the UK.

Tony’s father Roy has made it his life mission to ensure that his son also gets to have a good life on foreign soil, but the former only plays along so as not to offend his doting dad. Tony has different dreams, so he thwarts his father’s plans by repeatedly failing to meet basic language requirement for overseas recruitment. This, of course, leads to a conflict between the father and son.

United Kingdom of Kerala also stars Johny Antony, Sangeetha, Meera Vasudevan, Manju Pillai, Indrans, Manoj K Jayan, Alphonse Puthren, among others. The film’s plot was inspired by reports of the ever-increasing number of Indian students who fly to universities abroad and never return. Critics pointed out that the film’s biggest failing was its lack of focus and that the filmmaker pivoted to a preachy tone in the second half. The film was described as a missed opportunity to tackle a meaningful subject.
