Christian pop performer Joel Smallbone turns director-actor on his upcoming film Unsung Hero, that traces the journey of his musicalfamily from Australia to the States amid a lot of toil and sacrifice
Iconic Christian pop music duo, For King & Country, comprising brothers Luke and Joel Smallbone, are finally ready to show their life story in the theaters. Turning director-writer for Unsung Hero, Joel Smallbone also played the role of his father David Smallbone, while his brother turned producer. The film was also co-written and co-directed by Richard Ramsay and co-produced by Justin Tolley and Josh Walsh.
Unsung Hero stars Joel Smallbone as his father David Smallbone, Daisy Betts as Helen Smallbone, Kirrilee Berger as Rebecca Smallbone, Jonathan Jackson as Eddie Degarmo, Lucas Black as Jed Albright, Paul Luke Bonenfant as Daniel Smallbone, Diesel La Torraca as Joel Smallbone, JJ Pantano as Luke Smallbone. The film also has Angus K. Caldwell, Hillary Scott, Lance E. Nichols, Roslyn Gentle, Candace Cameron Bure, Terry O’Quinn, Don Most, Rachel Hendrix, and Beau Wirick in impactful roles.
The plot of Unsung Hero follows the Smallbone family’s departure from Australia to the States after patriarch David Smallbone’s music company collapses. In search of a brighter future, David and his pregnant wife Helen set out to rebuild their lives with nothing more than “six children, suitcases, and their love for music.”
The official synopsis of Unsung Hero further discloses, “Based on a remarkable true story, Helen’s faith stands against all odds and inspires her husband and children to hold onto theirs. With their own dreams on hold, David and Helen begin to realize the musical prowess in their children, who would go on to become two of the most successful acts in Inspirational Music History: five-time Grammy Award-winning artists For King & Country and Rebecca St. James.”
Unsung Hero’s trailer was dropped on November 14, 2023. The film will be released theatrically on April 26, 2024, and shall later be available on Lionsgate.
