Veteran actress Urvashi has cleared the air on why she and Jayaram could not attend the legendary Sreenivasan’s funeral, as they were caught up in a crucial stage of film shooting.

Late Malayalam actor-writer-filmmaker Sreenivasan has had a profound impact on the careers of his contemporaries, purely by the powerful characters he has crafted for them. Urvashi and Jayaram are also actors who owe some of their best characters to him. So their absence during Sreenivasan’s funeral had sparked much debate online, and Jayaram especially was at the receiving end of much criticism. But Urvashi has now cleared the air on why they could not attend the legend’s funeral as they were caught up in a crucial stage of shooting.
Why Urvashi and Jayaram could not attend Sreenivasan's funeral
Sreenivasan, who made immense contributions to Malayalam cinema, passed away on December 20, sparking a flood of homages on social media even as industry veterans flocked to pay their final tribute. In an interview with News 18, Urvashi revealed that she and Jayaram were shooting for a film directed by Pandiraj at the time, and could not abruptly leave.
"Me and Jayaram were in the crucial stage of the Pandiraj film. If we just came off, it would have caused big losses to the producer. It was that kind of a situation. Otherwise, I would have been the first one to reach there,” the veteran actress said.
“ But I don't have to prove anything - Sreeni ettan and his family too are also aware of it,” she added.
Jayaram had earlier said he could not go to the funeral, though he did not specify the reason.
Jayaram and Urvashi, who have acted together in scores of Malayalam films, are reuniting for the Tamil film, helmed by Pandiraj.

Apart from acting, Sreenivasan penned some of the most memorable Malayalam films such as Sandesham, Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam, T. P. Balagopalan M.A. and Nadodikattu. Many of his popular collaborations were with directors Priyadarshan and Sathyan Anthikad. The 1991 movie Thalayana Manthram is another movie penned by him, which featured Urvashi in one of her most notable roles. She played the greedy daughter-in-law, Kanchana, while Sreenivasan played her husband. Jayaram too appears as his brother.
