The Tamil film Vaa Vaathiyaar, starring actor Karthi in the lead role, is set to make its digital debut. Helmed by Nalan Kumarasamy, the film is set to drop on Prime Video soon on January 28, 2026. The film will also be available for OTTplay Premium subscribers with a top-up option.

Actor Karthi’s latest film Vaa Vaathiyaar was among the big Pongal releases this year, hitting theatres on January 14, 2026. However, the film opened to middling reviews and is now set to make its OTT debut within two weeks of its theatrical release. Prime Video has announced that Vaa Vaathiyaar will stream on the platform, starting January 28, Thursday. Apart from Tamil, the Karthi film will be available to stream in Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Kannada.
Despite a novel idea, the film had a forgettable run at the cinemas, but is expected to find an audience in the digital space. This is the first Pongal release to hit the OTT space.
What is Vaa Vaathiyaar about
The 2026 Tamil film Vaa Vaathiyaar revolves around Ramu (played by Karthi), who has been brought up by his grandfather, an ardent fan of the legendary actor-politician MGR. The film pays homage to the legend through Ramu’s tale, as his grandfather believes there exists a connection between his grandson and his screen idol. Ramu who grows up to become a cop, follows a morally questionable line. But certain incidents prompt Ramu to rethink his ways.

Vaa Vaathiyaar features Karthi in the lead role, while Rajkiran is seen as his grandfather. Krithi Shetty, along with senior actors Sathyaraj and Nizhalgal Ravi, play other key roles. Anandaraj, Shilpa Manjunath, Karunakaran, G. M. Sundar, and Ramesh Thilak are also part of the film.
Among his upcoming films, Karthi has Sardar 2 in the pipeline. Recently, director Lokesh Kanagaraj confirmed that he would be working Karthi-starrer Kaithi 2 after his Telugu film AA23.
