Tamil star Dhanush must be overjoyed given that his latest film Vaathi/Sir is performing well both in Tamil Nadu and the Telugu states, even though the trade had predicted a dull box office run for the movie. The footfall for the film across many parts of the country saw an uptick on Saturday. And if the advance booking is anything to go by, the film is also expected to post good business on Sunday.

According to industry sources, Dhanush-starrer has emerged as the third biggest opening so far at the Tamil Nadu box office after the last month's two big Pongal releases — Ajith Kumar's Thunivu and Vijay's Varisu. The early estimates suggest that in Tamil Nadu, the film raked in more than Rs 6 crore, and earned over Rs 2.6 crore in the Telugu states. It earned over Rs 11 crore in India alone on its opening day. Even though it received mixed reviews from the critics, the good word of mouth from the audience seemed to have helped the film draw more audiences to the theatres. As per early reports, the two-day collection of the film is expected to be over Rs 20 crore.

The Telugu version of the film titled Sir is all set to enter the profit zone in the Telugu states. "#SIR exceeds expectations on 2nd Day with ₹3.3 Cr share (estimate) & ₹6 Cr Gross in Telugu States. Big growth of 40% in Nizam alone!! 2 Days Total Gross ₹10.5 Cr!," tweeted AndhraBoxOffice.com.

Vaathi/Sir is written and directed by Venky Atluri. Set in the 90s, the film talks about the importance of making education affordable for people from across different social backgrounds. The film also stars Samyuktha, Sai Kumar and Samuthirakani in supporting roles.
