It looks like the director Venky Atluri views on reservation in education has not gone well with many. The director, while promoting his latest outing, Vaathi (Sir in Telugu) starring Dhanush and Samyuktha in the lead, had stated that reservations should be based on economic factors and not caste-based as is being followed in educational institutions. In the interview, the journalist had asked Venky what is a crucial change that he would bring about, if he became the Union Education Minister of the country. To which Atluri said that he would erase reservation. He added that according to him, reservation should be based on economic factors and not caste.

Social media users have slammed the maker and have called him out for being ignorant of caste-based reservation and the need for it. The irony is that his film, Vaathi talks about education being accessible to all. A user pointed out to him and said, "I was about to watch your movie today and booked tickets @dhanushkraja but this stupid talk from your movie director has made me not to watch your movie. Never do another movie with this director #Vaathi #Vaathireview (sic)."

Another user stated that it was time for him to go get educated and learn about Dr BR Ambedkar. Yet another Twitter user wrote, "Didn't expect much from Venky Atluri but what irked me the most was that the first thing he could think of when asked about reforming education was 'removing reservation based on caste'. I Knew he would have such views, but expected him to have that as some 25th or 26th reform (sic)."

In the meantime, the film has opened to mixed reviews with Dhanush's performance in the film winning accolades. Vaathi is a bilingual and the film has has a simultaneous release in Telugu. Interestingly, the film marks Dhanush's debut in Tamil.
