Multifaceted star Dhanush is basking in the success of his latest movie Vaathi/Sir. Before the release of the movie, the trade pundits predicted a dull opening for the movie and the market forecast was not very promising for its growth. However, when the film was released in cinemas, it proved all the predictions wrong.

The success of Vaathi is a good example of Dhanush's grasp of the people's taste. He seems to have a finger on the pulse of the audience which gives him the confidence to choose movies that have thematic depth, and scope for subtle performances as opposed to over-the-top action and acting sequences.

Dhanush wrote and sang the Vaa Vaathi melody both in Tamil and Telugu. And that song became a huge hit in both languages. "You can't believe the streams it's doing. All platforms are calling me and 'what digital numbers you guys are doing? It's not possible.' It's (Mastaaru Mastaaru) doing 1 crore streams in Telugu, and 3 crore streams in Tamil. Overall we have 4 crore (40 million) streams," said GV Prakash Kumar, the film's music composer, in an interview with Galatta Plus.

Vaathi director Venky Atluri recalled an incident in a recent interview that demonstrated Dhanush's shrewdness as a performer and creator. "I still remember when we were shooting that song, Samyuktha walks in. Dhanush looks at her and says you're a very lucky girl. Because this song will make you a star. That's exactly what happened. I have seen her transformation from an actor to a star. The moment Vaa Vaathi started, people are whistling and clapping, and all the cellphones are up recording. It was like a concert, not a film. Everyone is recording and waving. Every time Samyuktha appeared, people are clapping and yelling. The song made her a star," he added.

Vaathi/Sir became a hit both in Tamil Nadu and the Telugu states. According to the producers, the film, from all languages, collected Rs 75 crore within 8 days of its release.
